While the winter months are often a time for rest and rejuvenation on the farm, they’re also when many farmers begin to plan for the next growing season. You can be part of their planning process for 2026 by participating in a CSA!
Keep reading to learn how CSAs work and discover the incredible network of KC Food Circle Farmers offering CSA shares this Winter and Spring.
What is CSA?
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA for short) is a partnership between you and the farmer who grows or raises your food. Similar to a subscription service, you pay the farmer upfront and in return receive an assortment of fresh, local food items throughout the season, generally on a weekly basis.

Why Participate in CSA?
CSA is a win-win for both farmers and eaters.
For Farmers:
- Upfront income helps cover the costs of seeds, labor, and supplies.
- It reduces financial risk, especially in unpredictable growing seasons.
- Weekly engagement with set customers allows farmers to stay in touch with consumer demand.
For You:
- You’ll enjoy peak-season produce, harvested at its freshest, and other local products raised right here in our region.
- It’s a fun way to try new foods that wouldn’t otherwise think to buy.
- It’s convenient! One weekly or regular pick up at a set time and location.
- It provides a deeper connection to your food. You’ll know where your food comes from, who grew or raised it and how.

A Few Things to Consider When Choosing a CSA Program:
Not all CSA programs are the same and each farm does things a little differently. Here are some key things consider.
1. Size & Price
- How big is a weekly box or share? Some farms offer “small box” and “big box” options. This is important when considering different household sizes, appetites and budgets.
- What’s the total cost for the season? If cost is a barrier, ask about payment options too. Some farmers may be able to offer flexible and/or sliding scale options.
2. Pickup or Delivery
- Where will you get your box each week? On-farm? At a farmers market? A community pickup site?
- What day and time is pickup, and does it work with your schedule?
- Some farms even offer home delivery or collaborate with local businesses as pickup spots.
3. Season Length & What’s Included
- How many weeks does the CSA run? Some are just for the season while others are for the full year.
- Look at your calendar and account for any known travel.
- Does the share include only produce, or are their other items like eggs, meat or bread included as well?
- Are there add-on options available like flowers or other non-food items?
