Community Meals

As the federal government shutdown continues, we’re keeping a close eye on how it’s affecting families, farmers, and food access in our region. Chief among the concerns is the halt and decrease in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding.

SNAP is the nation’s largest anti-hunger program, helping millions of households stretch their grocery budgets and put nutritious food on the table. Its interruption has serious ripple effects, especially for families already facing food insecurity and for local farmers and markets who help feed our communities.

Supporting local farmers, such as those listed above, is one way to keep our community strong and every local purchase helps nourish both people and our local economy. If you’re looking for another way to connect or lend support this holiday season, one of our new KC Food Circle members, KC Food Not Bombs is a great place to start. They share a free community meal every Sunday from 4–5 p.m. near the bus stop in front of 3757 Independence Ave. in KCMO, and everyone is welcome to join, whether for a warm meal, free groceries, bread, hygiene supplies, or clothes. You can come for just the meal, just the groceries, or both! Their weekly meals are created with love using recovered ingredients from local farmers, grocery stores and restaurants, turning community care into nourishment for all.

They’ll be hosting meals throughout the holiday season, including November 23 and 30, and December 21, 28, and January 4.

As you gather around the table with family and friends this season, we here at The Food Circle wish you a holiday that’s overflowing with good food, good cheer, and plenty of locally-sourced ingredients fresh from our area’s dedicated farmers and food purveyors.

Check out all our KC Food Circle members by heading to our Member Directory and find those nearest you on the Eat Local Map!

Peace, Love & Happy Holidays to all!
