If you’ve ever wondered how to get the freshest, most flavorful local food while supporting the people who grow it, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA for short) might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Participating in CSA is like a subscription service of delicious local food. Let’s break it down.

What Is CSA?

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a model that connects you directly with a farmer. Here’s how it works:

  • You purchase a share of the harvest at the beginning of the season
  • Each week (or on a regular schedule), you receive a box or “share” of what’s currently being harvested on the farm.
  • This could include everything from crisp greens and juicy tomatoes to colorful root veggies, herbs, mushrooms, and sometimes eggs, meat, bread, or even jams and ferments!

To put it simply, you invest in the farm upfront and in return, you enjoy a steady stream of fresh local food throughout the season.

Why Participate in CSA?

CSA is a win-win for both farmers and eaters.

For Farmers:

  • Upfront income helps cover the costs of seeds, labor, and supplies.
  • It reduces financial risk, especially in unpredictable growing seasons.
  • Farmers get to connect directly with their community.

For You:

  • You get peak-season produce, harvested at its freshest, often within days or event hours of pick-up.
  • It’s a fun way to try new foods and recipes and expand your palate.
  • It’s convenient! You get one weekly or regular pick up at a set time and location.
  • Best of all? You’ll know where your food comes from and who grew it.

A Few Things to Consider When Choosing a CSA share

Not all CSA programs are the same and each farm does things a little differently. Here are some key things to think about:

1. Share Size & Price

  • How big is a weekly share? Will it feed you, your partner, your family?
  • Some farms offer “small box” and “big box” options. This can be perfect for different household sizes or appetites.
  • Ask about cost per season and payment plans too as many farms offer flexible options when needed.

TIP: Don’t hesitate to reach out to the farmer and ask what a typical week looks like. They’ll likely be happy to tell you all about it!

2. Pickup or Delivery

  • Where will you get your box each week? On-farm? At a farmers market? A community pick-up site?
  • What day and time is pick-up, and does it work with your schedule?
  • Some farms even offer home delivery or collaborate with local businesses as pick-up spots.

3. Season Length & What’s Included

  • How many weeks does the CSA run? Some are just for the season while others are for the full year.
  • Does the share include only produce, or are their other items like eggs, meat or bread included as well?
  • Are there add-on options available like flower shares or value added goods?
